Mistral Large 4 trended on HN today, but its preview launched on 6 Oct and the weights aren't out yet, so it isn't listed.

  1. Wiz

PHP2Shell: AI-assisted research finds unauthenticated RCE in PHP's core engine

The bugs are in the PHP engine itself, so they don't depend on your application code. Wiz reports memory-safety bugs in how PHP handles fatal errors such as out-of-memory, affecting nearly every release back to 5.4 (CVE-2026-109618 and -109619, CVSS 9.2). Frontier models helped with discovery and with porting exploits across versions. PHP shipped fixed releases on 21 Oct (reported as 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, 8.2.35). OpenAI separately published its account of coordinating the disclosure: the CVE IDs leaked a day early, and it proposes a framework for handling AI-found vulnerabilities.

  2. Anthropic

Claude Duet: Anthropic's proactive agent, in research preview

A separate app (iOS, Android and web) where Claude works in the background, sends a morning brief, drafts next steps and asks for approval before it sends a message, pays or deletes anything. The preview is a waitlist for US Pro and Max subscribers, and background work counts against your plan's usage limits. It's the clearest sign yet that the big labs see "always-on agent" as a product category of its own, separate from chat.

  3. OpenAI

OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud

If your company buys cloud from Google, GPT models are about to become a procurement checkbox, not a new vendor contract. Coverage reports a private preview of GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna in Vertex AI Model Garden, billed through Google Cloud Marketplace, with general availability "in the coming weeks". Zero data retention isn't live yet. OpenAI's page blocked our fetch, so these details are as reported by 9to5Google and others.

LayerFS: a filesystem for AI coding agents

Every agent tool call becomes a commit on a branch over shared, deduplicated storage. Forks copy no files, same-file conflicts are refused, and each line records which step wrote it. That gives parallel agents isolation and a full audit trail without a container per agent. Source is on GitHub; no license is stated on the site.

GitHub repos 5

All five broke out in the window: at least 50 stars a day and at least 3× their earlier rate. Repos created today were weak, and many were duplicate "skill" repos from two related accounts.

  1. GitHub

    Louis-CFM/coucou

A notch/top-bar companion that watches Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI and others, so you can approve permission prompts from the notch or your phone's lock screen. MIT code.

    ≈ +610 ★ in window≈ 728/day · was ~230/daybreakout

  2. GitHub

    vllm-project/vllm

The serving engine is pulling stars at five times its usual pace, following v0.32.0 (18 Oct): NVFP4/FP8 KV-cache defaults on some GPUs, a GPU n-gram speculator, and Python 3.10 dropped. Check the breaking changes before upgrading.

    ≈337 ★/day (avg since 19 Oct)was ~70/daybreakout

  3. GitHub

    nano-muse/nanoMuse

An open-source personal agent across phone, desktop and browser that keeps working with the app closed and asks before irreversible actions. It's an open counterpart to the proactive-agent apps now shipping from the labs.

    ≈307 ★/day (avg since 19 Oct)was ~54/daybreakout

  4. GitHub

    amontlabs/lcu

Lifts Codex's computer-use runtime out of the app so Claude Code, Codex CLI or Pi can drive a desktop with it. It still needs the ChatGPT desktop app installed locally. Linux X11 and Apple-silicon macOS; MIT.

    ≈287 ★/day (avg since 19 Oct)was ~50/daybreakout

  5. GitHub

    DSH-APP/DSHA

Runs DeepSeek's agent harness on an Android phone in a full Ubuntu userland, with no root and no Termux. One more sign that agent harnesses are being ported to wherever people have a device.

Papers 5

Hugging Face daily papers featured on 21 Oct; submission dates shown. The arXiv listing was unavailable (503).

  1. Hugging Face Papers

    Evolving Agent Interfaces (Agent S4)

A meta-agent rewrites the tools a computer-use agent works through. With the evolved tools, open Qwen3.8-27B reaches 21.3% on OSWorld V2, 3.8× the same model with fixed tools and above the paper's Opus 4.8 (20.6%) and GPT-5.5 runs, at a fraction of the cost. Code released.

Matrix-Game 4.0: real-time playable worlds from video models

A small game engine keeps the world state and rules, and a distilled video model paints the visuals on top. The result is 480p at 60 FPS on one RTX 5090 (58 FPS on a 5070 Ti) with 112 ms input latency. Weights, code and assets are released.

  3. Hugging Face Papers

PAR: progress-aligned recurrence for length generalization

Looped models can be made to actually use extra iterations. Training each loop step to match the state after k operations lets a 0.5B model trained on 32 moves track 512 at 95.5%, where explicit chain of thought scores 0.8%.

  4. Hugging Face Papers

S-Agent 2.0: spatial reasoning with a general coding agent

Instead of a specialist model, it hands a stock coding agent (Codex or Claude Code) a command-line 3D-perception toolkit and a persistent scene memory. That adds 14–20 points to Qwen3.8-27B on spatial benchmarks.

Sage-A1.5: a 35B MoE agent model with built-in orchestration and verification

The report describes a model trained to delegate to subagents with isolated contexts and to check its own progress mid-task. It's an open-weight attempt to put the harness's job into the weights. Weights are on Hugging Face.

Things to try 1

Trail of Bits' patching-bugs and regression-hunt plugins (21 Oct, 45 pts on HN). These are two agent plugins drawn from Trail of Bits' own upstream patching work. Reviewing more than 130 merged patches, the team found 21 regressions. patching-bugs demands a "three-arm proof": the bug reproduces on the original code, passes with the patch, and fails again when the patch is reverted. regression-hunt looks for supported behaviour the fix broke; in their tests it gave 25% fewer false positives than a plain Codex prompt.

First step: in Claude Code, run /plugin marketplace add trailofbits/skills, then pick both plugins from /plugin menu (Codex: codex plugin marketplace add trailofbits/skills). Both work best when your repo has a short THREAT_MODEL.md and patching guidelines in AGENTS.md.

The take

Finding bugs is now cheap. The scarce part is everything after: getting a fix written, reviewed and deployed before attackers act, and getting it right.

In PHP2Shell, frontier models helped find and exploit a decade-old engine bug, and the disclosure was rushed after the CVE IDs leaked a day early. Trail of Bits found 21 regressions in carefully reviewed merged patches, so it now demands proof that each fix works. LayerFS makes every agent edit a commit you can review, and Duet asks before it acts. Prediction: within a year, a major disclosure program shortens its 90-day window for AI-found bugs. That window assumed finding was the slow part.
